Agriculture, forestry & fishery

Agriculture

As of October 15, 2011, provinces in the North harvested 434,500 ha of winter rice, accounting for 35% of total cultivated area and equaling48.7% from the same period in 2010, mainly due to later seasonal cultivation from last year’s same period, of which the Red river Delta achieved 188,100 ha, accounting for 32.5% of total cultivated area and equaling 45.3% from last year’s same period. As of mid-October, Southern provincesonly cultivated 497,800 ha of winter rice, equaling  69.4% from last year’s same period.

Together with this, provinces over the country also harvested 2,145,400 ha of summer-autumn rice, accounting for 81.3% of seeded area. Provinces with fast reaping speed: Can Tho achieved 96% of cultivated area; Kien Giang 95%; Dong Thap 92%; and Vinh Long 88%.

As of October 15, the country cultivated124,200 ha of maize, equaling 80.2%; 15,600 ha of sweet potato, equaling 50.8%; 25,700 ha of soybean, equaling 30.7%; 59,700 ha of vegetables, equaling 80.6% from last year’s same period. As estimated, flocks of buffalos and oxen were equal from last year’s same period, flocks of poultry rose 7-8%. Only flocks of pigs reduced 2-3% from last year’s same period.

Forestry

Generally, the area under concentrated forestation in 10 months over the country reached 157,000 ha, equaling to 83.1%; dispersed planted trees were 170.5 million, up 0.3%; wood production was 3,530,000 m3, up 12.2%; firewood production was 24.3 million Ste, up 2.1% from the same period last year. The country’s damaged forest area in 10 months was 2,017 ha, of which there were 994 ha burnt and 1,023 ha destroyed.

Fishery

Fishing production in 10 months was estimated reaching 4,549,000 tons, up 3.9% from the same period last year, of which farmed products achieved 2,413,000 tons, up 5.5%; and catching production gained 2,136,000 tons, up 2.2% (sea catching gained 1,975,000 tons, up 2.3%).

Industry

October’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) rose 5.2% from September and 5.3% from the same period in 2010. Ten months’ IPI in this year rose by 7% from last year’s same period, of which mining and quarrying reduced by 0.7%; manufacturing rose by 10.2%; power, gas water rose by 9.4%.

The consumed index for the manufacturing industry in 9 months of 2011 rose by 15.6% from the same period last year. The stock index as of October, 1, 2011 for the whole sector rose by 21.1% from last year’s same period.

According to a labor survey for 4,273 industrial enterprises, employed labor index in October, 2011 was estimated rising 0.9% from September; workers in October slowed down by 0.7% from the same period in 2010. Of which, workers of state-owned enterprises decreased by 4.1%; of non-state enterprises rose by 1.6% and of FDI enterprises reduced by 0.1%. Among 1st digit level industrial branches, labors in the mining and quarrying in October rose by 2.6%;in the manufacturing slowed down 1.5%; and in the power, gas and water reduced by 8.8% from the same period last year.

Investment 

Generally, the realized investment capital from the state budget in this year’ ten months was 149.7 trillion dong, equaling 74.6% of the yearly plan and up 8.6% from the same period in 2010. Of which, capital under central management was 34.2 trillion dong, equaling 81.8% of the yearly plan and up 7.6%; capital under central management was 115.5 trillion dong, equaling 72.6% of the yearly plan and up 8.9% from last year’ same period.

Attracted FDI from the beginning of the year to 20/10/2011 reached 11,273.9 million USD, equaling 78.2% from last year’s same period. Of which, the registered capital of 861 newly licensed projects was 8,876.2 million USD (reduced 29.9% by capital and 19.3% by project from the same period last year); additional registered capital of 264 projects licensed from previous years was 2,397.7 million USD. The realized FDI in 10 months was estimated reaching 9.1 billion USD, up1.1% from last year’ same period.

Ten months’ FDI concentrated mainly in the manufacturing with 5,631.1 million USD, which accounted for nearly 50% of total registered capital, including 4,279.3 million USD of newly registered capital and 1,351.8 million USD of added capital; the power, gas, warming water and vapor, and air conditioning gained 2,526.8 million USD, accounted for 22.4% of total registered capital, including 2,525.7 million USD of newly registered capital and 1.1 million USD of added capital; the construction gained 712.1 million USD, accounted for 6.3% of total registered capital, including 569.9 million USD of newly registered capital and 142.2 million USD of added capital.

In ten-month period, 47 provinces/cities had newly licensed FDI projects and 48 countries invested in Vietnam.

Government revenues and expenditures

As estimated, total Government revenues from the beginning of the year to 15/10/2011 were 529.9 trillion dong, equaling 89.1% from the annual estimate, of which domestic revenues gained 323.6 trillion dong, equaling 84.7%; revenues from crude oil was 81 trillion dong, equaling 116.9%; and from import-export was 120.9 trillion dong, equaling 87.2%. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from the state-owned enterprises accounted for 78.1% of the annual estimate; 77.3%from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil); 84.3%from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes; 102.4%from taxes imposed on high-income persons; 72.1%from gasoline fees; 73.6%from other fees.

As estimated, total Government expenditures from the beginning of the year to 15/10/2011 were 574.5 trillion dong, equaling 79.2% from the annual estimate. Of which spending for investment and development was 118.9 trillion dong, equaling 78.2% (spending for capital construction only was 113.5 trillion dong, equaling 78.1%); 377.5 trillion dong for economic and social development, national defense and security, equaling 80.5%; 78.1 trillion dong for paying debts and aids, equaling 90.8% from the annual estimate.

Trade, prices & services

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services

As estimated, total retailed sales of consumer goods and services for 10 months reached 1,561 trillion dong, up 23.1% from last year’s same period, and it would be 3.9% if the factor of price increase were excluded. Of which, the trade business gained 1,232.1 trillion dong, accounted for 78.9% of the total and up 23.3%; hotel and restaurant reached 173 trillion dong, accounted for 11.1% and up 23.8%; the service was 140.9 trillion dong, accounted for 9% and up 21.6%; the tourist 15 trillion dong, accounted for 1% and up 16.8% from last year’s same period.

Exports-Imports

Generally, ten months’ total export turnovers reached 78 billion USD, up 34.6% from last year’s same period, of which the domestic economic sector gained 34.8 billion USD, up 30.4%; and the FDI sector (including crude oil) gained 43.2 billion USD, up 38.1%.

Generally, ten-month import turnovers reached 86.4 billion USD, up 27.2% from last year’s same period, of which the domestic economic sector gained USD 48.1 billion, up 25.6%; and the FDI sector gained 38.3 billion USD, up 29.2%.

As estimated, ten months’ trade deficits were 8.4 billion USD, equaling 10.8% of total export turnovers. If gold factor was excluded the figures were at an estimate of 8.9 billion USD, equaling 11.7% of total export turnovers.

Consumer price index (CPI)

October’s CPI rose 0.36% from September, of which education had the highest pace of 3.2%; family appliances went up 0.73%; textile, hats, footgear up 0.63%; drinks and tobacco up 0.49%; medicines and health care up 0.45%. Other groups that slightly rose or decreased from September wereculture, entertainment and tourism up 0.3%; catering and related services up 0.06% (grain food up 1.27%; foodstuff down 0.49%); postal and communication service down 0.17%; transport down 0.13%; housing and construction material down 0.03%.

October’s CPI rose by 17.05% from December, 2010 and 21.59% from last year’s same period. Ten months’ average CPI rose by 18.5% from that in the same period last year.

October’s gold price index decreased by 4.22% from September and rose by 24.97% from December, 2010 and 43.18% from the same period in 2010. October’s USD price index rose by 0.39% from September; 1.52% from December, 2010 and 7.55% from last year’s same period.

Carriage of passengers and cargos

As estimated, passenger carriage in 10 months reached 2,331.6 million participants, up 13.8% and 99.5 billion passengers-kilometers, up 11.9% against last year’s same period. Of which central transport gained 34.6 million participants, up 10.3% and 23 billion passengers-kilometers, up 10.7%; local transport reached 2,297 million participants, up 13.9% and 76.5 billion passengers-kilometers, up 12.3%. Land transport gained 2,145.3 million participants, up 14.2% and 74.7 billion passengers-kilometers, up 12.5%; river 159.5 million participants, up 9.5% and 3,4 billion passengers-kilometers, up 14.4%; aviation 11.4 million participants, up 12.9% and 17.4 billion passengers-kilometers, up 10.8%; sea 5.6 million participants, up 2.4% and 340.7 million passengers-kilometers, up 3.7%; rail 9.8 million participants, up 2.3% and 3.7 billion passengers-kilometers, up 3.5% from the same period last year.

As estimated, ten months’ cargo transport reached 665.3 million tons, up 11.6% and 175.7 billion tons-kilometers, up 0.9% from the same period last year, of which the domestic transport gained 626.7 million tons, up 12.2% and 57.7 billion tons-kilometers, up 7.5%; the overseas transport reached 38.6 million tons, up 4.3% and 118.0 billion tons-kilometers, down 2.9%. Land transport gained 509.5 million tons, up 12.4% and 27.7 billion tons-kilometers, up 11%; river 103.8 million tons, up 11% and 13 billion tons-kilometers, up 13.7%; sea 45.8 million tons, up 6% and 131.3 billion tons-kilometers, down 2.7%; rail 6 million tons, down 2.3% and 3,4 billion tons-kilometers, up 6.9%.

Postal and communicational services

The total number of new telephone subscribers in 10 months was estimated reaching 9.3 million, down 17.2% from the same period in 2010, including 46,100 desk telephone subscribers, down 76.2% and 9.3 million mobile phone subscribers, down 16.1%. The number of telephone subscribers over the country bythe end of October, 2011 was estimated reaching 130.7 million, up 3.9% from the same period last year, including 15.5 million desk telephone subscribers, up 0.2% and 115.2 million mobile phone subscribers, up 4.4%.

The number of broadband internet subscribers by the end of 10/2011 was estimated reaching 4.2 million, up 19.4% from the same period last year. The number of internet users by the end of 10/2011 reached 32.1 million, up 24.4% against last year’s same period. The total postal and communicational service net income in 10 months was estimated reaching 130.9 trillion dong rose by 23.7% against the same period last year.

International visitors to Viet Nam

International visitors to Viet Nam in 10 months were at an estimate of 4,830,600, up 15.8% from last year’s same period. Of which,visitors coming for tourist purposes were 2,916,800, up 11.9%; 804,100 for business purposes, down 4.7%; 809,000 for visiting relatives, up 71.9%. Visitors to Viet Nam by aviation were 4,045,400, up 20.8%; by sea 30,200, down 28.1%; by land 755,000, down 3.4% from last year’s same period.

Social issues

Farmers’ hunger

Generally, the country in 10 months had 595,000 hungered households, down 17% from last year’s same period, in proportion to 2,498,000 hungered persons, down 10%. To overcome the problem, all administrative levels since the beginning of the year have supported hungered households 16,900 tons of food and 9.2 billion dong.

Epidemic diseases and food poisoning

Generally, the country in 10 months had 42,200 cases of hemorrhagic fever (44 died); 7,100 cases of virus hepatitis (2 died); 914 cases of viral encephalitis (18 died); 538 cases of typhoid; 734 cases of A (H1N1) (14 died); 71,500 cases of foot, hand and mouth disease (130 died) and 93 cases of food poisoning making 4,400 persons poisoned, of which 15 died.

Total HIV-infected persons over the country as mid-October reached 246,000, of which 99,300 turned to AIDS and 51,500 died of AIDS.

Traffic accidents

Generally, the country had 10,000 cases of traffic accidents in 9 months, killing 8,400 persons and injuring 7,600 others. As compared to the same period last year, the number of traffic accident cases decreased by 1.4%, the death went up 0.2%, and the injured up 1.8%. On average, each day in 9 months of this year, the country had 37 cases of traffic accident, killing 31 persons and injuring 28 others./.
